I v 1. любить, нравиться: to like smb, smth — любить кого-либо, что-либо; to like to do (doing) smth — любить делать что-либо; 2. хотеть, желать (1). Глагол to like относится к группе глаголов, после которых обязательно прямое дополнение. Он употребляется в конструкциях to like smb, smth; to like to do smth и to like doing smth. Когда в предложении содержательно нет прямого дополнения, его место замещает местоимение it. Таким образом, русские предложения, включающие обстоятельства времени и места, не имеющие прямого дополнения, типа Вам нравится? соответствуют в английском языке конструкции типа to like it somewhere, где it занимает место дополнения:He likes it here very much — Ему здесь очень нравится.
В эту группу входят также глаголы to dislike, to love, to hate, to repeat, to discuss. (2). Оборот would like используется для оформления вежливой просьбы, предложения что-либо сделать:Would you like another cup of tea? — Не хотите ли еще чашку чая?

Предлог подобия like употребляется с существительными, местоимениями:He like his wife hates cats — Он, как и его жена, ненавидит кошек.

Предлог like особенно часто используется, когда сравниваемый объект или процесс не является тем, с чем он сравнивается:They worked like slaves.

(2). Русским быть похожим, походить на кого-либо соответствует английское to be like smb:He is very much like his mother — Он очень похож на мать.
Русское быть похожим друг на друга передается сочетанием глагола to be с прилагательным alike:They are very much alike — Они очень похожи друг на друга.
(3). Русское похоже, что будет дождь (снег) передается сочетанием с глаголом to look:It looks like rain — Похоже, будет дождь.
(4). Выражение feel like doing smth соответствует русскому быть в настроении (хотеть) что-либо делать:I don't feel like joking. — Мне не до шуток.
